Privacy policy

Winstory is a history app for iPhone. It has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and nothing to buy. This page lists everything the app does with data, in plain words. It describes version 1.0 of the app.
What stays on your iPhone
Your ribbon (the events you have met in rounds and whether you answered them correctly), your difficulty level, an unfinished round, your chosen event language and a cache of daily events are stored only on your device. They are never uploaded, shared or visible to anyone else, including us. Deleting the app deletes them; Settings → Reset progress clears them at any time.
What leaves your iPhone
| Data | Sent to | Why | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Today's date (month and day) and the event language | Wikimedia Foundation (api.wikimedia.org, or the language edition at <language>.wikipedia.org) | To fetch the "On this day" events shown in the app | By Wikimedia under its own privacy policy; the request contains no identifier of yours |
| A device identifier (the push subscription id if notifications are set up, otherwise Apple's identifier for vendor), the app's bundle identifier and version | Our update service, api.winstory.info | Once per launch, to tell whether an update notice is needed | Only as long as needed to answer that check; never used for anything else |
| Push subscription id, the same device identifier, two technical tags ("first install" and the screen reached at launch) | OneSignal, Inc., our push notification provider | To deliver notifications if you allow them | Until you delete the app or ask us to remove it |
| Your email and message, if you write to us | Us | To answer you | As long as needed to help you, and deleted on request |
The device identifier is a random value. It is not your name, phone number or Apple ID, and we do not link it to any of those.
What we never collect
- No advertising identifier (IDFA), no tracking across other apps or websites, no App Tracking Transparency prompt.
- No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone or health data.
- No account, password or payment data.
Notifications
Winstory asks for notification permission only after your first completed round, and only if you tap Allow. Notifications are occasional reminders that a round is waiting. You can switch them off at any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Winstory.
Web pages inside the app
This policy, the support page and, rarely, an update page open in an in-app browser. Like any browser, it may store cookies or local storage for those pages. Wikipedia articles open in Safari.
Children
Winstory is made for adults and teenagers aged 13 and over and is rated 12+. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Deletion and your rights
Everything on the device is deleted with the app or with Reset progress. To have the device identifier removed from our update-service logs and from OneSignal, email support@winstory.info with the subject "Delete my data"; we do it within 30 days. You may also ask what we hold, object to processing, or complain to your local data-protection authority.
International transfers
Our update service runs on Cloudflare's global network; OneSignal and Wikimedia operate in the United States. Data sent to them may be processed outside your country under their safeguards.
Changes
If the app starts doing anything new with data, this page changes first and the date above is updated.
